EDUC639 Week 2

Updated: Mar 28, 2022

Social responsibilities of educators as they guide young learners.

Understanding the social responsibilities of an educator’s role is the central factor that must be highlighted to all involved in learning, be it the student, the parents, or the learning institution. An educator’s role can differ depending on where they are geographically and what they specialize in. An example is that inner-city children have different obstacles and lifestyles than rural community children. This variance in geography or region does not imply that either one is better or worse. However, educators should all be mentors and leaders regarding setting good examples for our youth to learn.

There are various perspectives on what teachers need to be doing and how they must be doing it. R. Shank indicates that the education system is completely broken, whereas K. Peck suggests it is not broken but needs some severe reconfiguration (Carr-Chellman & Rowland, 2017).

From my personal experiences, I must turn to my mantra of “Faith, Family, Purpose,” pondering this topic.

Faith guides us in the truth that Jesus is our Savior, and there is nothing that can remove us from his salvation 2 Peter 1:1 (New International Version, 1983). As an Instructional Designer in the education field, this is the foundation of what is necessary for me, my family, and my life.

Family is the next pillar that holds the truth in what we should be to our young learners. This concept of the family starts with home life and is supported with continuous honest communication and is reinforced by the learning institution faculty.

Purpose provides the final support pillar to this topic of guiding our young learners. Children are as unique as the stars in the heavens. I can honestly say that we have an exceptional educational program in our nation. However, it is a simple fact that it requires continuous monitoring and keeping an open mind to new technological advances and concepts.

Areas that I have found to be very beneficial in helping young learners excel in academics and life: STEAM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Architecture, Mathematics).

Scouting programs provided in the communities Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts of America.

School and community sports programs.

Nothing is ever a one-size-fits-all, but I do know that it takes a village to raise a child. If we work together, we can make the world a better place for all.
